CHAPTER EIGHT

‘YOU OKAY, EVIE?’

‘I’m fine, thanks, Janine.’ Evie was keeping an eye on the man who was restocking the automatic drinks machine in the reception area. ‘I’m looking forward to getting a hot chocolate. We ran out a couple of days ago.’

‘Hmm...’ Janine didn’t look convinced by the tight smile she’d received. ‘I’m sorry that we don’t have anybody needing cuddles at the moment. Seems like everyone’s got their mum close by.’

Evie just nodded as she swallowed the lump in her throat. She could do with a cuddle herself but she couldn’t tell her friend that, could she? And this was all her own fault. She’d known it was a bad idea to date a colleague. She’d been tricked into it by Ryan’s assurance that it wasn’t really a date but who went out with a friend and ended up in bed with them? In love with them...

Who dabbled with a fantasy that turned into reality only to crumble into dust and didn’t get hurt by it?

She’d barely seen Ryan since baby Grace’s surgery a few days ago. Since she had fallen into his arms after that terrifying wait to find out if the surgery had been successful. He hadn’t stopped by her desk to say hello, even, let alone have a chat. She avoided meeting his gaze if she could but, on the odd occasion it had happened, there was nothing significant in the eye contact. They would both nod and smile—as if they were just another member of staff at Hope Hospital. Like Marco, perhaps. Or Naomi.

‘I’m pretty busy, anyway,’ she told Janine. ‘I got roped into that committee for planning the children’s Christmas party. We’ve got our first meeting at five this afternoon, in fact.’

‘You’ll do a brilliant job.’ Janine smiled. ‘I’m going to make sure I’m on duty for the party. And for Christmas Day, if I can. I love trying to make it special for all the children stuck in here—and their families. Are we going to have a tree out here in Reception?’

‘I’m sure we will,’ Evie promised. ‘All the wards are getting one and we can’t have them in the ICU so we’d better do something amazing out here. We get a lot of children having to wait here with friends or relatives while their parents visit their siblings. Which reminds me, I want to put a call out to get some new toys in the box. Maybe I can ask Theo if I can get some funds for some new ones.’

‘Don’t ask him today,’ Janine advised. ‘I’ve heard he’s bringing Ivy in for some tests. She’s been unwell long enough for him to be getting really worried.’

‘Oh, no...he will be worried. She’s all he’s got after losing Ivy’s mum.’

‘I know.’ Janine frowned but then brightened. ‘I do have some good news, though. Grace is looking better. We were concerned after we took her off the ventilator because her blood pressure was too high but she’s responded to the medication well.’ She smiled at Evie.
